WHAT ORGANIZATION FOR A FUNCTIONAL STORAGE WAREHOUSE?
How should a functional warehouse be organized?
You want to ensure the safety of your operators, have an up-to-date inventory, or simply optimize space? Follow Ripack’s advice to get your warehouse organization working.
Choosing the right layout
To do this you have to consider your storage needs. In fact, the choice of racking depends on the size of your warehouse and the number of references stored.
The type of goods stored will also have to be taken into account, as this will change the equipment required. In fact, depending on the products to be stored, you will need different racks, platforms or handling machines.
Not only the equipment is important. In fact, labelling will also make it easier for you to store and pick up goods in your warehouse. By searching for barcodes or references, it will make it easier to trace your products and you will optimize organization and efficiency.
Organize storage spaces
There are different methods that will allow you to optimize your storage space.
The ABC method, which is applied in inventory management according to the size of the stock. For this purpose, products are classified with letters:
- Product A: the 20% of products that represent 80% of the value of your stock
- Product B: the 30% of products that represent 15% of the value of your stock
- Product C: the 50% of the products that represent 5% of the value of your stock
Your A-rated products will therefore be more accessible in your warehouse than your C-rated products.
Two other methods are useful to manage your stock according to the flows:
- The FIFO (First In First Out) method which is applied if you want to get the oldest goods out first.
- The LIFO (Last In First Out) method which is used when one wants to have a quick access to the last incoming goods.
Organizing your spaces will also involve using all the spaces present in your warehouse. Think about your organization vertically. Indeed, this will allow you to maximize your storage, in particular by placing the least demanded products high up.
